Misplaced Baggage- Transitioning – Part 1 November 20, 2008With a rusty dull blade, I make a small incision and cut counter clockwise around the protruding flesh on the right of my chest. Knowing that they will be gone in a few short moments supersedes the excruciating pain that is coursing through my traitorous body. I saw hard and fast that sounds reminiscent of [...]

Dear Sumeia,
How are you? I just read an essay from you in the NYTimes and I am so proud of you. Your poetry is beautiful.
When I first read your name, Le Thi Buu Tran, I thought to myself right away “Her mom is an intelectual, a romantic…”
I hope you don’t mind I am writing you as your search for your mother both intrigues and pains me in some way. I hope my first impression of how your mom named you would be of help for you.
Your mom, I assume she gave you that name, must have thought of it for quite some time, and with her “heart” and not following the tradition of using flowery, feminin names for daughters. She also must have loved you very much and thought very highly of you to give you such a strong, poetic and unique name, Le Thi Buu Tran.
I hope my writing you will not cause you pain. If I did, please forgive me. Please feel free to contact me if you would like to.
Warm regards,
Anh Vu Sawyer
